But as you ask these pairs of questions, you provide them with a means to respond to only one.<\/p>\n<p>Double-barrelled questions can be confusing. Chances are, the respondents will be annoyed at you.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, they won\u2019t respond to your survey questions anymore.<\/p>\n<p>They might also disregard other surveys from you and encourage their network to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Worst case scenario is these respondents will think so lowly of you. But it\u2019s a presumptive way of communicating your questions to the respondents.<\/p>\n<p>When using jargon, you\u2019re presuming the one you\u2019re talking to is \u201cin the know\u201d. This leads to using particular words \u2014 words they <em>actually <\/em>can\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this confuses respondents.<\/p>\n<p>Encountering these questions might also make them feel they\u2019re not smart enough for your surveys.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to ending up with fewer survey respondents, this reflects badly on you. While people working in sectors related to climate change are familiar with it, others don\u2019t know what it means.<\/p>\n<p>If a person unfamiliar with the term encounters it in a survey question, chances are they\u2019ll evade that. In the second image, the term came with a definition.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6cj8j\">Avoid poor answer scale options<\/h3>\n<p>If your survey questions revolve around ratings and scales, these are much easier for respondents to process.<\/p>\n<p>The problem? Define what a specific number on a scale means.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"v71\">Avoid confusing answer scale formatting<\/h3>\n<p>If the questions use a confusing answer scale formatting, you also have a problem. Better yet, have someone read it out for you.<\/p>\n<p>If you have trouble understanding the question, reword it to a sentence with a clearer message and one that\u2019s easier to understand.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fnel9\">Golden rules of avoiding survey bias<\/h2>\n<p>Avoiding question bias comes down to putting yourself in the shoes of your respondents.<\/p>\n<p>If you want them to respond to your questions as effectively as possible, ask the type of questions you\u2019d want to answer as effectively as possible, too.<\/p>\n<p>Here are <strong><em>do<\/em><\/strong>s and <strong><em>don\u2019t<\/em><\/strong>s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do: <\/strong>Write clearly. Avoid double negatives, confusing language, or jargon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your survey question is clear to you, it doesn\u2019t automatically suggest it\u2019s clear to everybody else. Always simplify your questions and use basic words.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t: <\/strong>Lead the person answering the question or make assumptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Allow the respondents to provide answers as they see fit \u2014 even if their answers aren\u2019t leaning towards the response you want. Make sure they are clear and relevant to the question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It can be easy to forget about an answer option\u2019s relevance when you\u2019re asking a bunch of survey questions.
