Since then, that version of Google Analytics has been phased out and replaced with Google Analytics 4.<\/p>\n<p>In the article, we show you how to replicate the behavior flow report in GA4. We also introduce Userpilot <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/product\/product-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">product analytics <\/a>as an alternative solution.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get right to it!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lm4r\">What is behavior flow analysis?<\/h2>\n<p>The Google Analytics Behavior Flow report was a feature that enabled users to visualize the <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/conversion-path\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paths <\/a>that users took on a webpage.<\/p>\n<p>By understanding website user&#8217;s behavior, companies could:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify the most optimal<a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/conversion-path\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> conversion paths<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate how engaging the <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/product-led-content-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">content<\/a> was for users.<\/li>\n<li>Identify <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/friction-points\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">friction points<\/a> in the user journeys leading to users dropping off.<\/li>\n<li>Discover the top-performing web pages &#8211; and pages where users end their <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/customer-journey-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journeys<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thanks to the insights, <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/b2b-marketing-team-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teams <\/a>were able to optimize <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/user-flow-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">user flow <\/a>from their websites and <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/conversion-rate-optimization-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improve conversion rates<\/a>. The reports you can generate in this way include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Free-form exploration.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/cohort-analysis-saas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cohort <\/a>exploration.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/conversion-funnel-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Funnel <\/a>exploration.<\/li>\n<li>Segment overlap.<\/li>\n<li>Path exploration.<\/li>\n<li>User lifetime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, there&#8217;s no <strong>Behavior Flow <\/strong>report available as it <strong>has been replaced in <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/ga4-path-exploration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GA4 with Path Exploration<\/a>. <\/strong>When we mention GA4 Behavior Flow analysis or report, we mean the Path Exploration report.<\/p>\n<p>Other popular reports you can&#8217;t find in GA4 are the Site content reports, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/saas-landing-page-best-practices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landing pages <\/a>report, Exit pages report, or All pages report. However, you get the same <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/data-driven-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insights <\/a>from the Path Exploration report.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8nhr4\">How to access and navigate the Behavior Flow report<\/h3>\n<p>Creating the Path exploration report in GA4 is easier than the Behavior Flow report in Universal Analytics.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a step-by-step guide:<\/p>\n<p>1. Sign into your GA account and choose your property.<\/p>\n<p>2. For example, you can use it to identify the most popular user actions after visiting your homepage.<\/p>\n<p>The data is visualized in a Sankey diagram and tree graph. It&#8217;s made up of bars, called nodes, which represent user actions. The wider the node, the higher the event or user count.<\/p>\n<p>Hovering over a node highlights all actions before it. When you click on it, the 5 most common actions afterward appear in the diagram, together with corresponding metrics. You can view further actions by clicking +X more.<\/p>\n<p>The Path exploration supports 3 metrics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Event count <\/strong>&#8211; the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/in-app-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">events <\/a>users triggered for each node.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/active-user\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Active users<\/a> &#8211; <\/strong>how many users have engaged with the website or app.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total users <\/strong>&#8211; the total number of unique users who have <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/event-tracking-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">logged an event<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"image strchf-type-image regular strchf-size-regular strchf-align-center\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/diagram-behavior-flow-analysis_d64207ac2ee845acd141556ba7e3eb4a_800.png 1x\" media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/diagram-behavior-flow-analysis_d64207ac2ee845acd141556ba7e3eb4a_800.png 1x\" media=\"(min-width: 769px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/diagram-behavior-flow-analysis_d64207ac2ee845acd141556ba7e3eb4a_800.png\" alt=\"The path \/behavior flow visualization\" \/><\/picture><figcaption>The path\/behavior flow chart.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"2f3po\">Limitations and challenges of using GA4 for flow reports<\/h3>\n<p>Google has got the stick for GA4, mostly due to missing reports and limited customization options.<\/p>\n<p>However, when it comes to the Flow exploration report, my experience is slightly different, at least when compared to other<a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/product-analytics-tools-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> analytics tools <\/a>I&#8217;ve used.<\/p>\n<p>First, GA allows a fair bit of customization which is great for web analytics, but not necessary for <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/user-behavior-analytics-use-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">analyzing user behavior<\/a> inside a product. This added complexity makes the tool more challenging to set up.<\/p>\n<p>Users also find the UI <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/intuitive-product-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unintuitive<\/a>. As a result, it involves a steeper learning curve and makes it more challenging to gain the necessary <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/customer-analytics-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ft5ls\">Try Userpilot for product flow analysis<\/h2>\n<p>Userpilot is a product growth platform with robust <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/userpilot-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">analytics <\/a>features.
