That classic example of an onboarding wizard could sometimes feel more like a chore than actual help. Still, clunky as it was, it served its purpose as an <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/solutions\/user-onboarding-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">onboarding solution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"1rshq\">But the onboarding standards have changed since then, and users have come to expect something more than just a series of text-filled screens.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"1pk7b\">In the article below, I\u2019ll share what I&#8217;ve seen work for our customers and explain how to move past the limitations of those old wizards.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ace4h\" data-block-id=\"ace4h\">What is an onboarding wizard?<\/h2>\n<p data-block-id=\"644c9\">An onboarding wizard is a simple user interface element designed to guide new users through the initial setup of the product. As such, it isn\u2019t a <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/best-user-onboarding-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full onboarding walkthrough<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"2lc71\">Think of the Windows setup wizard, featuring a series of full-screen dialogs for installing and configuring a program. Here\u2019s what makes it ill-equipped for modern digital products:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Limited functionality:<\/strong> These wizards typically focus on technical setup. While they\u2019re great for installations or getting through the initial settings, they rarely teach you how to use the product meaningfully to benefit from its features.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No hands-on learning:<\/strong> Onboarding wizards aren&#8217;t interactive. Users only needed to click &#8220;Next&#8221; through static screens, unable to truly explore the product. We know that <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/time-to-value\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">time to value (TTV)<\/a> is key for SaaS products, so this approach hinders <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/improve-user-activation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">user activation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low personalization:<\/strong> Wizards are often impersonal, ignoring differences in user roles, goals, or experience level. <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/saas-products\/\">SaaS products benefit<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/personalize-user-onboarding-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">personalized onboarding<\/a> experiences tailored to the users&#8217; JTBDs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maintenance challenges:<\/strong> As products evolve, hard-coded wizards get hard to maintain and iterate on. For digital products, onboarding flows need regular updates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"94efn\" data-block-id=\"94efn\">Modern alternative for onboarding wizards: Contextual in-app onboarding<\/h2>\n<p data-block-id=\"43v1h\">For most SaaS apps, the onboarding has shifted from telling users what to do to guiding them to find value.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"a2t1h\">That\u2019s why most digital products adopt <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/best-user-onboarding-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in-app onboarding experiences<\/a> right within the application to help mitigate all the shortcomings of the onboarding wizards. As such, they work well as <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/welcome-screen-saas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">welcome screens<\/a> that kick off the onboarding flow, setting expectations and highlighting key features\/benefits.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"1cp3k\">The welcome screens should also include an <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/welcome-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">onboarding survey<\/a> for collecting targeted user data that serves to personalize the subsequent flow. As such, they provide a clear, actionable roadmap of a <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/improve-activation-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">successful activation flow<\/a>, but let the users explore the product freely.<\/li>\n<li>Finalizing a task usually requires taking actions inside the app, which <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/product-adoption-saas\/\">encourages product adoption<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"clsp\" data-block-id=\"clsp\">Interactive walkthrough<\/h3>\n<p data-block-id=\"ceth1\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/interactive-walkthroughs-improve-onboarding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interactive walkthrough<\/a> is a guided in-app tour that combines different UI elements that provide educational tips and prompt the user to act.
