Fact.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Don\u2019t treat emails as merely transactional, think of them as opportunities to build relationships and trust in every step of the user journey.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Whether it\u2019s &#8211; a password reset, a new feature announcement or a discount offer &#8211; this is your chance to remind your user of the value you bring them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I first wrote about some of <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/onboarding-welcome-email-examples\/\">the best welcome onboarding emails<\/a>, this time I want to focus on those emails that get your users back into your product with a clever hook.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bn3qs\">What to Look for in the Best Retention Emails<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The rule of thumb:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Don\u2019t wait for a user to leave before you try to implement retention tactics. Every email, every interaction, even every conversation you have with your customer is a chance for you to continue driving growth.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When looking at the best user retention emails, some of the qualities that made them stand out were:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>They focus on the user\u2019s outcomes and goals<\/li>\r\n<li>They provide insight and tips to continue engaging with the product successfully<\/li>\r\n<li>They\u2019re personalized to the user\u2019s unique journey and actions thus far<\/li>\r\n<li>They show off the company\u2019s brand, style, and approachability<\/li>\r\n<li>They are truly memorable and make an impression<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We\u2019ve written plenty about the <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/user-onboarding-emails\/\">anatomy of copy writing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/userpilot.com\/blog\/onboarding-welcome-email-examples\/\">HTML vs plain text<\/a> and catering to the user\u2019s journey, so I won\u2019t keep you waiting any longer!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here is a round-up of some of the best user retention emails out there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<!--ARCADE EMBED START--><div style=\"position: relative; padding-bottom: calc(56.8027% + 41px); height: 0px; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/sw11.userpilot.com\/WkWUNQj7WT4QoqhLSQbE?embed&#038;embed_mobile=tab&#038;embed_desktop=inline&#038;show_copy_link=true\" title=\"Churn Prevention\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; color-scheme: light;\" ><\/iframe><\/div><!--ARCADE EMBED END-->\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n<h3 id=\"hlii\">Retention Email #1 &#8211; Airfocus<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Is everything ok?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Another example of a thoughtful email focused on me, not the product.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.airfocus.com\" rel=\"nofollow\">Airfocus<\/a> nails this email by asking about my needs, outcomes, and if there\u2019s anything they can do to help me reach my goals after not having engaged with the product after a week.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image image full\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/airfocus-user-retention-email_1965c6052d8327fc33016eb33ec566e1_2000.jpg\" alt=\"Airfocus user retention email\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Airfocus user retention email<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4ilrq\">What I like<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>It\u2019s not flashing product features at me, rather focuses on what I am trying to achieve<\/li>\r\n<li>Even if I did a quick skim-read through it, my eyes can very clearly focus on one line: <strong>What\u2019s the one obstacle keeping me from engaging?<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>Another example of how plain text and human-centered content goes a long way<\/li>\r\n<li>It\u2019s written by a real person I can simply hit reply to<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4lki7\">Retention Email #2 &#8211; Typeform<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Get inspired. <\/strong>Their subject line was so simple, yet so powerful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Remember how I said every email is a user retention email? Here\u2019s a perfect example by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typeform.com\" rel=\"nofollow\">Typeform<\/a> team.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After having set up my first form, I received an email as a direct follow-up, offering me tips and advice from other successful customers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image image regular\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/typeform-retention-email_83130fc65435eb0d4d42ace58547c989_800.jpg\" alt=\"Typeform Retention Email\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Typeform Retention Email<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a46qf\">What I like<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>It\u2019s personalized to the action I just carried out<\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t stop now\u201d is a strong and simple statement that inspires me to engage further.<\/li>\r\n<li>It puts focus on my success with real examples &#8211; and it isn\u2019t flashing a bunch of features that make no sense at this point in my journey<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bdn40\">Retention Email #3 &#8211; Grammarly<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammarly.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Grammarly<\/a> wins points here for shamification \ud83e\udd23<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Noticing lack of use, Grammarly has managed to mix gamification with an excellent sense of humor to remind me I should be using their app.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image image regular\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/grammarly-winback-email_b4b564e517958b842e05ed7a71be636c_800.jpg\" alt=\"Grammarly winback email\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Grammarly Winback Email<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"70ue8\">What I like<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Say what you will about HTML emails, but if it\u2019s shiny and pretty it\u2019ll get my attention. It\u2019s a delight to look at<\/li>\r\n<li>It shows the company has a sense of humor and is fun and approachable<\/li>\r\n<li>Has a fun CTA &#8211; comic sans-style font included. Not sure if that was on purpose or not, but I like it<\/li>\r\n<li>Dog-fooding: Grammarly knows grammar, and that is a pure delight to my grammar-loving self. As I\u2019ve said before, good grammar never goes out of style<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5uu0o\">Retention Email #4 &#8211; Shinesty<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Brian Hennessy, CEO at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkoot.com\" rel=\"nofollow\">Talkoot<\/a>, shared with me one of his favorite retention emails by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shinesty.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shinesty<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There is no doubt in my mind that Shinesty know what they\u2019re doing &#8211; and they do it well! This is another great example of how even during the offboarding process, you shouldn\u2019t lose your sense of brand, or sense of humor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This example would 100% make me want to give them another chance (as a matter of fact, it makes me want to give them a first chance!)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image image regular\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-static.userpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/shinesty-retention-email_7840c81c3a058bd65e630a6a47f04de9_800.png\" alt=\"Shinesty Retention Email\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Shinesty User Retention Email<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"304al\">What Brian liked<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The reason I love this so much is because it builds trust in three different ways:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Authenticity = trust. <\/strong>It\u2019s completely on-brand. It sounds exactly like everything else they do. When you\u2019re able to nail your brand voice at every consumer touchpoint, it gives the impression it\u2019s a very authentic company<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Care = trust. <\/strong>Taking the time to write such incredible emails, even when you\u2019re breaking up with them, shows they really care. It makes me think that if they get these kinds of details right, they must also be getting the big stuff right: product, price, shipping, returns, etc<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Humor = trust.<\/strong> It\u2019s just plain funny. It\u2019s not trying too hard. It delivers the information I need if I want to start the subscription again. But that bit of humor they inject in everything they do proves that they understand me on a human level<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3bhd6\">Retention Email #5 &#8211; MyProtein<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Some people say less is more.
