Don’t get me wrong. The Intercom product is great. But Intercom Product Tours is only really suitable for very basic product tours, as we discussed in a previous blog.

  • It only supports linear embedding, i.e. a series of non-interactive information panels like the one in the image above, not interactive product tours:

  • The user interface is quite basic, which limits the degree of contextualization of the prompts. For example, there are no modals, slides, checklists, or hotspots. If your product has multiple uses and audience segments, or many different functions, this one-size-fits-all approach is problematic.
  • Intercom Product Tours doesn’t support A/B testing. How can you tell if your onboarding process can be improved?There are no AB tests on Intercom.
  • Although it claims to be code-free, the styling you can use without CSS code is actually quite limited. If you want full control over the look and feel, you’ll need a web developer.

Finally, Intercom Product Tours is only available as an add-on to the core Intercom product.

That is, you can’t buy it separately: you have to spend at least $149 per month extra on top of your Intercom subscription.

However, Appcues only supports linear onboarding.

Their «Flows» don’t push users to complete tasks: they’re passive.

That’s fine for onboarding materials in a help center, perhaps. Linear onboarding of this type is good for very basic introductory steps.

But when a user is actively engaged in a task, they want help right there, contextually. This is called reactive onboarding, because it reacts to the user’s behavior in the app in real time.

On the contrary, linear paths used as a form of proactive onboarding are annoying for users who are not interested in the feature at the time they are trained on it.

I also find Appcues a bit difficult to use. Perhaps because they’ve added so many elements to the service over the years.

But I don’t like having to jump back and forth between pages when designing a flow.

  • Appcues lacks certain transition actions, such as triggered actions, scroll position, or page changes, which would make product tours more interactive.
  • It severely limits the functionality available on the lowest plan (Essentials). If you need checklists, more than 10 events, or more than 5 user segments, you’ll need to upgrade to the Growth plan (starting at $879/month payable annually, meaning you’ll have to shell out over $10,500 to start using Appcues for more use cases).
  • Appcues does not have a resource center feature, which means it cannot be used to offer self-service support to your users.
  • Native styling options are limited: full control again depends on CSS coding.

Pendo is a complete digital adoption platform with impressive analytics, in-app feedback, and product adoption features.

It’s primarily aimed at business users and probably has the most advanced analytics of all the tools we’re covering in this article. But everything comes at a price.

Advantages of Pendo

Despite its price and steep learning curve, Pendo has some pros compared to its competitors.

  • Pendo is known for its powerful, easy-to-use analytics tools like Paths, Retention, and Funnels. (Starting in Q1 2023, Userpilot will have the same analytics features, with more robust functionality.) However, they may not be necessary if you’re just looking for a guided tour program.
  • Pendo offers a shareable product planning tool to organize customer feedback and prioritize the highest-value features. It helps keep teams aligned with the shared feature planning roadmap.
  • It works on both web and mobile apps, so if you need both, this may be a good option for you.

Cons of Pendo

Surprisingly, for a product guidance and engagement tool that claims to be «all-in-one,» you can’t directly act on Pendo’s user analytics in Pendo.

That’s because Pendo doesn’t let you target users segmented by in-app events with the in-app guides you’ve built with it.

Here is a brief list of Pendo’s cons:

  • It also doesn’t allow event-based experiences to be triggered within the app. This is likely due to technological debt, but it makes Pendo’s analytics practically unfeasible.
  • Pendo offers limited onboarding features, which means you can’t always create the best experience for your users. If you want checklists, you can only access them from the Resource Center, which defeats the purpose of having them in the first place.
  • Pendo’s pricing is only available upon request. The company doesn’t list pricing for higher-tier plans on its website. However, some reviews say they have prices starting at $20,000–$25,000 per year for a single product, and around $50,000 per year for the mid-tier package. This might be Pendo’s biggest drawback.

  1. Easy to use (well, for some): Userflow’s drag-and-drop interface allows you to build flows on the dashboard and see an overview of the entire flow (all steps) at once. Some people really like the visual way of building the entire flow on a dashboard rather than within their app. This also has some limitations, which we’ll discuss in the next section.

  2. Customizable: Using Userflow, product tours can be customized with branding elements, visual design, and interactivity.

  3. Data-driven: Userflow provides simple analytics and feedback tools, allowing product teams to track user engagement and make data-driven improvements to the journey over time.

Cons of Userflow

Although Userflow has many advantages, it also has quite a few drawbacks:

  1. You don’t build your flows directly into your app, which can be confusing (and I personally find counterintuitive). To select the element you want to attach the tooltip to, you need to open a Chrome extension that takes a snapshot of its interface:

  2. Limited customization options: Although Userflow offers a number of customization options, some users may find the level of control and flexibility limited compared to other tools or custom developments.

For example, you don’t build the product tour on the interface itself; instead, you have to build it on the dashboard and then take a difficult snapshot of the UI to select the element you want to attach the tooltip to, for example:

  • Pro – $600 billed annually, or $7,200 per year – this plan includes all features
  • Enterprise – On-demand pricing only – This plan includes everything in Pro + custom limits, SSO, and a custom contract.

 

Software Product Tour #12: Stonly

Stonly positions itself as a budget-friendly alternative to its more expensive competitors, but in fact, it’s more of a CS tool for building knowledge bases than a product adoption onboarding tool. As with Intercom Product Tours, Stonly’s tour builder feels like a makeshift add-on to knowledge bases rather than a full-fledged product (compared to competitors like Userpilot or Appcues).

Therefore, it can be a good tool for startups and small businesses with few users and a per-view pricing model (which can become very expensive once you have more users) and who want a tool primarily for the knowledge base use case.

Stonly’s product tours aren’t the most intuitive (and require quite a bit of coding), and they come with limited integrations. In fact, their setup and builder are extremely confusing: you can create tours both in the Stonly dashboard and at the top of your app, but then you have to go back to the dashboard to edit the content of the steps you just created in the Chrome extension… 🤔 This doesn’t make much sense…

Stonly Prices

Stonly, as of 2023, only has two plans on its pricing page:

  • $249 (or $199 if you pay annually) for up to 4,000 visits, and then you pay as you go, which can get very expensive if you have more MAUs or very active users who use your tool daily.
  • Custom quote – for business customers only. To be completely honest – at the $249 monthly price point you’d be better off throwing in the extra $50 and getting a monthly subscription to a more intuitive and robust product targeting tool like Userpilot for that.
